BALTIMORE, MD—Three Bulldogs scored double figures with freshman guard
Mitchell Taylor tossing in a team-high 14 points to lead South Carolina State an 61-58 win over Coppin State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play Monday (March 3
rd) inside the Physical Education Complex Arena.
SC State improved to 14-16 overall,9-4 in the MEAC capturing their 5
th straight league win to secure a 2
nd place spot in the conference race with one game remaining in the regular season.
Senior guard
Omar Croskey added 10 points and eight (8) rebounds, while freshman
Drayton Jones finished with 11 points and six (6) rebounds in the win.
The Bulldogs dominated in several categories on the night leading the wat in points in the paint (26-18), second chance points (15-12), fast break points (10-3), bench points (42-19) and rebounding (39-24).
Coppin State was led by Ryan Archey with 17 points, while teammates Greg Spurlock and Justin Winston added 12 each in the loss.
The game was tied 30-30 during intermission.
SCSU posted their biggest lead of the second-half 10, 45-35 off a free-throw by
Jordan Simpson at the 10:14 mark. A jumper by Archey cut the lead to one, followed by a free-throw tied the game 54-54 with 2:43 remaining.
Free-throws down the stretch seemed to be the deciding factor with
Caleb McCarty nailing a pair with 0:02 seconds remaining to seal the 61-58 victory.
UP NEXT: South Carolina State will conclude the regular season Thursday (March. 7) on the road at NC Central. Tipoff for the women's contest is 5:30 pm, with the men following in a 7:30 p.m. game time.
