ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State will be among the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams battling for the league's outdoor track and field titles May 9-11, 2023 to be conducted on the Norfolk State University campus.
Coach Donald Cooper's teams qualified 14 participants each in both the men's and women's competition with several SCSU performers entered in multiple events.
Host Norfolk State is the defending champion in the men's competition, while Howard is the women's defending champion.
Tuesday's action will get underway at 1 p.m., while Wednesday's competition starts at 9 a.m. Thursday's action, which begins at 10 a.m., will be streamed, in its entirety,
live on ESPN+.
Leading the way for the SC State men will be sprinters
Waddell Rembert-Jett and
Kristopher Brown, and thrower
Dexter Ratliff, all seniors, while senior
Jada Banks and sophomore
Angelica Frederick will spearhead the women.
Rembert-Jett owns the top mark in the MEAC in the 100 meters (10.22) and will also participate in the 200 meters and the 4x100m relay team, which holds down the third spot in the league (40.40). Brown is third in the 220 meters (20.91) and Ratliff first in the discus (49.17m) and fourth in the hammer throw (47.96m) for Cooper's men.
Banks, slowed by injuries this season, is the reigning Most Outstanding Performer from last year's championship and holds the SCSU record in the 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters. Frederick is ranked among the leaders in both the 100 meters and 200 meters.
Both the men's and women's 4x100 and 4x400-relay teams are also expected to earn points for SC State.
