LANDOVER, MD – South Carolina State sprinter Tyrell Richard established a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Championship record Saturday as well as a facility mark in the 400 meters with a time of 46.62 at the Wayne K. Curry Sports and Learning Center.

The Georgetown senior erased the meet's mark of 47.00 set by North Carolina A&T's Dajuan Harding in 2017. Richard finished ahead of three-time defending champion North Carolina A&T's Trevor Stewart, who was clocked at 47.04. Richard picked up 10 points for the Bulldog squad, which amassed 30 points for a fifth-place finish in the team standings.

The SC State women, sparked by runner-up finishes by long jumper Breana Tyler and weight thrower Keturaha Hunter, totaled 16 points to finish 10^th in the women's team standings. The North Carolina A&T women won their third consecutive title.

Eight SCSU performers reaped All-Conference honors for outstanding showings during the meet. Richard earned first-team accolades, and also reaped second team honors along with the other members of the 4x400-meter relay team, while Orangeburg's Daniel Seawright made the All-MEAC third team. In the women's competition, both Tyler and Hunter were named to the second team.

Also picking up points for SC State on Saturday was the 4x400-meter relay team of Treshawn Hardy, Dyrell Kinloch, Joshua Martin and Richard, which finished totaled eight points with second-place finish with a clocking of 3:17.52, a season-best performance by the team. In addition, Seawright placed seventh in the 60 meters for two points, and triple jumper Jalen Sanford grabbed two points for seventh with a leap of 13.62 meters, a personal record.

SC State head coach Tim Langford praised his teams' effort and noted that things look bright for the upcoming outdoor season as well as the future.

"I'm happy that we performed well for the most part," said Langford. "We don't have the numbers that many of the schools have but every one of the athletes we brought to the championship competed to the best of their ability and it showed. And, we had several athletes to set personal records.

"On the women's side, I can't say enough about Breana Tyler and Keturah Hunter, both of whom had a solid meet. Tyler set a personal record, while Hunter was very close to her personal record, which was important to the women's success."

The SC State men also drew praise from Langford.

"Tyrell (Richard) showed his senior leadership with two outstanding performances, setting a meet record in the 400 meters and anchoring the 4x400-meter relay team to a second-place finish and helping us place fifth overall in the men's team standings.

"Jalen Sanford earned points for us also, and the DMR (Distance Medley Relay), which earlier earned points is made up of all freshmen. And, with Demek Kemp re-joining the team for his final outdoor season, things look promising for the outdoor campaign as well as the future."
