th,) night, dropping a 54-86 decision to Yale at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
"There is only one way out of slump we are in and that is to keep working to improve and sticking together in this tough stretch that we are in," said head coach
Murray Garvin.
South Carolina State played its third of a four-game road swing and nine-day road stretch, beginning with Wisconsin, Boston College and Yale.
"Anytime you are struggling to make shots it puts tremendous pressure on you defensively and right now the people we expected to score consistently just aren't doing it effectively. We will continue to study film and get better going forward," said Garvin.
Sophomore forward Damani Applewhite paced South Carolina State with a team-high 13 points and five rebounds.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs forced Yale to 22 turnovers while holding close in several categories including rebounds (34-47), points off turnovers (19-29), 2
nd chance points (17-24), fast break (7-9).
South Carolina State dominated with points in the paint outscoring Yale 28-16.
Newcomers Justin Jones had a solid effort off the bench with eight points and five rebounds, while freshman Rayshawn Neal added seven.
South Carolina State returns to action on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. (PT)/9 p.m. (ET), when they travel to the west coast to take on UCLA in a non-conference showdown.
