Outler Leads Lady Bulldogs to 67-63 Win Over Coppin State

Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C.Ashleigh Outler scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 67-63 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
 
SC State (9-11, 5-5 MEAC) led 17-14 at halftime, but was down by one, 35-34, at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs regained the lead on a trey by Outler with 8:35 left in the third quarter and stayed ahead of the Lady Eagles (7-13, 4-4 MEAC) for the entire third period.
 
Down 59-57, Coppin State's Omaah Tayong connected on a pair of free throws to tie the game at 59-all at the 2:55 mark. But a jumper by Jazzmine Johnson 20 seconds later put SC State back up for good. The Lady Eagles pulled within one (64-63) on a layup by Keena Samuels with 35 seconds left in the game, but they could get no closer the rest of the way.
 
Samuels led three Lady Eagles in double figure scoring with 15 points. Janelle Lane finished with 14 points and a team-high three blocks, while Tayong tallied 12 points and five rebounds.
 
Brittany Drumgoole scored in double digits for the 10th time this season after finishing with 15 points. Jasmine Coleme had 10 points, four rebounds and one block, while JaQuanna Murray set a new career-high in blocks for the second straight game with six. She added four rebounds and two points.
 
The Lady Bulldogs continue their home stand with a 5:30 p.m. game against Morgan State on Monday. Monday night is Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Breast cancer survivors who sign up at the registration table at the game will be recognized during the game and will receive a gift. Fans are asked to wear pink.
