Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State's
Brittany Drumgoole hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the game to put SC State up 65-64, but Wofford's Marissa Bayer scored on a layup with two seconds left to give the Terriers a 66-65 win on Saturday evening at Ben Johnson Arena.
The game was close for most of the 40 minutes and featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.
Wofford (2-1) led 19-17 after the first quarter and mounted a 10-point lead with 2:58 left in the second quarter. SC State (1-2) cut the lead to eight points, 35-27, right before halftime.
Bryeasha Blair scored three straight times to put the Lady Bulldogs up 38-37 with 5:58 left in the third period. A pair of free throws by Blair ended the quarter with SC State ahead 52-46.
The Lady Bulldogs maintained the lead until Bayer hit a layup at the 6:18 mark. Wofford pushed the lead to four points, 64-60, with 61 seconds left. A layup by
Jahmia Bradley and Drumgoole's trey gave SC State a momentary lead, which was undone by Bayer's shot just before the buzzer.
Bayer finished with 23 points and nine rebounds for Wofford. Kentra Washington had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds and Chloe Wanink scored 15 points.
Blair led all players with 28 points and added four rebounds and three steals. Drumgoole also scored in double figures with 12 points.
JaQuanna Murray had nine points, four blocks and three rebounds, while Bradley tallied nine points, nine boards and three assists.
The Lady Bulldogs host Morris College in their home opener on Monday evening. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
