Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—South Carolina State held off a late rally to improve to 3-1 in the conference in a 92-85 victory over rival North Carolina A&T Monday (Jan.11) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Four Bulldogs scored double-figures with junior guard
Eric Eaves tossing in a game-high 27 points, while sophomore
Ed Stephens finished 23.
Senior forward/guard
Gabriel McCray and junior
Greg Mortimer each chipped in 12 points in the win.
"It's feels good to win in spite of some errors late that allowed NC A&T to creep back into the game. We shot 45 free-throws tonight and made 33 so our offense was pretty good," said SC State head coach
Murray Garvin. "We have to do a better job of guarding people without fouling. We will take Tuesday off from practice and start preparation for Delaware State on Saturday."
"It was another good night from Eaves and Stephens as they continue to do great things on the offensive end.
Greg Mortimer was solid tonight," said Garvin. "Great conference win at home and we are off to a good start in MEAC play."
Eaves finished shooting 17-of-23 from the charity stripe, while Stephens connected on 6-of-9 from behind the 3-point arc. The Bulldogs shot 57.8% (26-of-45) from the field on the night.
South Carolina State returns to action on Saturday (Jan.16) when they host the visiting Hornets of Delaware State in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic showdown. Tipoff for the men is 4 p.m.
