ORANGEBURG, SC—The defense avenged last season's loss to the offense in a 16-14 victory in the annual Garnet & Blue spring football game with over 750 Bulldog fans and supporters in attendance at O.C. Dawson Stadium.
The offense scored early on toss from rising junior
Adrian Kollock, Jr. to rising senior
Jalen Simmons, which led to a 60-yard touchdown run (PAT-good). The defense accumulated its points after stopping drives by the offense – one point for any stop and two points for turning the offense away on a 3-and out.
Redshirt sophomore David Michael Clark led the rushing attack after a 45-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14-14. Clark finished with 15 rushes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Kollock, Jr. was second on the team with 11 carries for 49 yards and the Bulldogs All-MEAC performer Jalen Simmon finished with five rushes for 34 yards on the day.
Kollock threw 13-of-21 for 225 yards and a touchdown, while Simmons led the receiving corps with one catch for 60-yards.
"It was the usual spring game you had some good and some bad, but overall we had a chance to see some young guys do some good things," said SC State head coach Buddy Pough. "We have a lot of work to get this offense going and I am confident our staff can get it done."
The defense was led by freshman defensive end Greg Newell with 10 tackles (5 solo), one tackle for loss, and one sack. Rising redshirt junior linebacker added
Tyler Smith added eight (7 solo) and sophomore linebacker Jason Baxter chipped in six (5 solo).
SC State will play an 11-game schedule in 2015. The Bulldogs open the campaign on September. 6 when Pough's team battle SWAC foe Arkansas Pine Bluff in the annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
