ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State returns home Saturday for an early-season battle of unbeaten teams when the Bulldogs host Virginia State at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium on Willie E. Jeffries Field.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The contest will highlight Ag & Land Grant | Community & Commerce | Greek Night.

SC State (2-0) enters the matchup following an impressive 31-13 victory over Florida A&M in the Orange Blossom Classic. The Bulldogs opened the season with an 87-0 victory over Savannah State and have outscored their first two opponents 118-13.

Virginia State (2-0) has also opened the season in impressive fashion. The Trojans defeated Barton 44-17 before earning a 42-13 conference victory over Bowie State. Virginia State has outscored its opponents 86-30 through two games.

THE MATCHUP
Saturday's contest features two offenses averaging more than 500 yards per game but producing those numbers in distinctly different ways.

SC State has established one of the nation's most productive rushing attacks through its first two contests. The Bulldogs average 553 yards of total offense, including 357.5 rushing yards and 195.5 passing yards per game. SC State is averaging 59 points per contest while allowing just 6.5. The Bulldogs have scored 16 touchdowns, including 11 on the ground.

Virginia State counters with a dangerous passing attack. The Trojans average 507.5 yards of total offense, with 364.5 yards coming through the air and 143 on the ground. Virginia State is averaging 43 points per game and has scored 12 touchdowns — seven passing and five rushing.

That sets up one of the game's biggest storylines: SC State's rushing attack against Virginia State's passing game.

SC STATE ON THE GROUND
Running back Mason Pickett-Hicks has been the centerpiece of the Bulldogs' rushing attack. Pickett-Hicks has carried 27 times for 313 yards and three touchdowns, averaging an eye-catching 11.6 yards per carry and 156.5 yards per game. His longest run is 58 yards.

Josh Shaw has added 92 yards and a team-high five rushing touchdowns on 17 attempts, while Tyler Smith has rushed for 108 yards on only 12 carries. Ronnie Robinson has contributed 52 yards and a touchdown. Collectively, SC State has amassed 715 rushing yards while limiting its opponents to only 74 yards on the ground — 37 per game.

The Bulldogs' ability to control the line of scrimmage could be critical against a Virginia State defense allowing 101.5 rushing yards per game.

TROJANS DANGEROUS THROUGH THE AIR
Virginia State quarterback Rahsaan Matthews Jr. presents a different challenge for the SC State defense.
Matthews has completed 46 of 64 passes for 663 yards and seven touchdowns through two games. He is completing 71.9% of his attempts and averaging 331.5 passing yards per game.

Jaylen Pretlow has emerged as his top big-play target with 11 receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 19.2 yards per catch. Vincent Ordenes leads the Trojans with 14 catches for 149 yards, while Nazir McKenzie has five receptions for 113 yards and two scores. Kevin Gayles has also caught two touchdowns.

Virginia State has completed 72.5% of its passes as a team, meaning SC State's secondary will face its most productive passing attack of the young season.

BULLDOG DEFENSE MAKING ITS MARK
SC State's defense has been dominant through two games.

The Bulldogs are surrendering only 139 yards of total offense per game, including 37 rushing and 102 passing. Opponents have completed just 41.7% of their passes and have yet to score an offensive touchdown either rushing or passing. SC State has also recorded five sacks while holding opponents to a 21.9% conversion rate on third down.

Jordan Dollard has helped set the tone up front with nine tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Joshua Barker has two sacks, while Ka'von Chisolm has 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack. As a unit, SC State has recorded 23 tackles for loss for 70 yards.

That front seven will be challenged by a Virginia State offense averaging 7.6 yards per play.

VIRGINIA STATE DEFENSE CREATES TURNOVERS
The Trojans have been particularly effective at taking the football away through the air.

Virginia State has intercepted four passes in two games, returning them for 99 yards. Amir Mateo leads the Trojans with two interceptions, while Kile Artis returned an interception 75 yards. Ian Wynn has also recorded an interception.

Raja'ee Jones leads Virginia State with 17 tackles, while Tristan McCall has 10 tackles and the Trojans' lone sack.

That turnover ability could be significant against an SC State offense that has thrown two interceptions through its first two games.

QUARTERBACK PLAY
SC State has received production from both Keely Watson and Ronnie Robinson.

Watson has completed 19 of 30 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns, while Robinson is 11-of-14 for 115 yards without an interception. Together, the Bulldogs are completing 68.2% of their passes for 391 yards and four touchdowns.

Malaqhi Jones leads SC State with seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. Troy Hillman has four catches for 73 yards, Shamontae Burgess has four receptions for 60 yards and Nicolas Brown has four catches for 58 yards.

The statistical comparison shows strength against strength. SC State owns the advantage in scoring, rushing offense and total defense, while Virginia State brings the more productive passing attack and has generated more interceptions.

KEYS TO THE GAME
For SC State, establishing Pickett-Hicks and its deep rushing attack while keeping Virginia State's explosive passing offense off the field will be important. Defensively, the Bulldogs will look to pressure Matthews without surrendering explosive plays to Pretlow, McKenzie and the Trojans' receiving corps.

Virginia State's challenge will be slowing an SC State rushing attack averaging 8.5 yards per attempt while finding a way to move the football against a Bulldog defense that has allowed only 278 total yards through two games. SC State's opponents have managed only 16 first downs compared with the Bulldogs' 51.

The matchup brings together two 2-0 programs with contrasting offensive identities: SC State's powerful ground game and attacking defense against Virginia State's high-powered passing attack.
