Bulldogs Slow Shooting Start Lead To Second Straight Defeat

Box Score OLEAN, NY –Another slow shooting day gave South Carolina State its second straight loss, as St. Bonaventure cruised to a 64-45 victory Saturday (Dec. 19) at the Reilly Center.

"We dug ourselves a hole we couldn't get out of during the first 12 minutes of the game," said SC State head coach Murray Garvin. "St. Bonaventure wanted an ugly game and that is what they made it."

"Both teams shot below 40% today. With us shooting a season low 28% (17-of-60) from the field. You just can't beat Atlantic 10 schools with that type of offensive production," said Garvin. "We have to take better care of the basketball and continue to improve every day. The season is a marathon not a sprint."

Senior guard Marcus Posley scored 26 points with three rebounds and four steals to lead St. Bonaventure to its fourth straight win. Posley finished with 9-of-24 shooting for the Bonnies (7-2), including 5-of-14 from distance.  Senior forward Dion Wright added 14 points and 10 rebounds and freshman guard Nelson Kaputo had 12 points with seven assists and seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs (5-7) shot 15% (3-of-20) from behind the 3-point arc, while the Bonnies (7-2) averaged 34.8% shooting from the field and 64.7 % from the free-throw line. They made just 7-of-25 (28%) from beyond 3-point range.

St. Bonaventure surged to a 41-20 lead at the break and cruised to victory.

Sophomore guard Ed Stephens led the Bulldogs with 10 points, forward Tashombe Riley grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and scored six points in the loss.

South Carolina State returns action Tuesday (Dec. 22) against Eastern Carolina in a 7 p.m. start, meanwhile after the holiday break the Bulldogs travel to the Midwest for another three-game road swing beginning with The Ohio State on Dec. 27 in 6 p.m. (EST) non-conference matchup.
