Box Score PITTSBURGH, PA – Sophomore guard
Ed Stephens tossed in a team-high 18 points while shooting 5-of-7 from 3-point range, but it wasn't enough as SC State suffered a tough 83-68 road defeat to Duquesne Wednesday (Dec.16) at Palumbo Center.
"I thought we played as good as we could for about 28 minutes," said SC State head coach
Murray Garvin. "The last 12 minutes I don't know where our mindset went. It is hard to win games versus power conference schools when you have 10 turnovers in the second-half."
South Carolina State (5-6) scored 10 of the game's first 14 points and led 39-38 at halftime.
With the score tied at 49 with 15:41 left Duquesne went on a 16-6 run, capped by a Jeremiah Jones 3-pointer, to take a 65-55 lead.
Senior guard Derrick Colter hit a 3-pointer with 2:09 left to push the lead to 81-63, the highest mark of the night. Senior guard Micah Mason scored 20 points and added four assists to help lead Duquesne.
Mason hit 7 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Colter finished with 18 points and seven assists and Jones added 16 points for the Dukes (9-2), who have won six of their last seven games.
Senior forward
Darryl Palmer and junior guard
Greg Mortimer each chipped in 11 points for the Bulldogs. Palmer grabbed a game-high nine (9) rebounds in the loss.
"We will watch this film and figure out our mistakes and prepare for another Atlantic 10 opponent in St. Bonaventure," said Garvin.
Next up South Carolina State remains on the road, when they travel to Olen, NY to take St. Bonaventure University Saturday (Dec. 19) in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
