Bulldogs Fall Short 68-66 On The Road To Wildcats

Box Score MANHATTAN, KS—The South Carolina State Bulldogs nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in a decade, after falling short 68-66 to Big 12 opponent Kansas State Sunday (Nov.29) at Bramlage Coliseum.

"We thought with their size and their struggle to shoot the ball from the perimeter early in the season, we thought that playing zone was the best opportunity to match up with them," said SC State head coach Murray Garvin. "For forty minutes I thought we did an excellent job following the game plan."

Sophomore guard Ed Stephens and backcourt teammate junior guard Eric Eaves combined for 45 of the team's final points to spark the team's relentless effort. Stephens scored a game-high 24, while Eaves finished with 21 in the loss.

Despite the loss, SC State's defense forced a game-high 17 turnovers, which turned into 18 unanswered points. Kamu Stokes the Wildcats leading scorer, was held to just eight (8) point on the day.

K-State had four players in double-figures with Justin Edwards leading the way with 18. Dean Wade chipped in 12 and Westley Iwundu with 11 points. Stephen Hurt recorded the games only double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

"I look at the stat sheet, I think rebounding was a big part. Their size caused a problem for us on the glass, but again, I give credit to Kansas State for a great effort and finishing the game," said Garvin.  "But I also want to give major kudos to our guys. We came in and fought and I truly believe that we had an opportunity to win and we were a possession or two away from accomplishing our goal. We are encouraged going forward."

Kansas State improves to 5-1, overall while SC State falls to 3-4 on the season.

NEXT UP: South Carolina State returns action Saturday (Dec. 5) as they open up MEAC play in the sunshine state against Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Florida. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
