Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – The South Carolina State women's basketball team fell 59-46 at Furman University on Monday night at Timmons Arena. Both teams now have 1-1 records.
SC State got on the board first with a layup by
Amber Howard with 8:40 left in the first quarter. The teams traded baskets the rest of the period and a layup by
Mallory Stone with 57 seconds left broke a 14-all tie and put the Lady Bulldogs ahead by two after the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter mirrored the first with both teams playing well on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. A steal and fast-break layup by
Ashleigh Outler gave SC State a two-point lead (24-22), but Furman went on a 5-3 run to take a 29-27 lead into halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs had an offensive drought in the third quarter, going 0-12 from the floor. Their only points during the period came on free throws by
Toni Grier (7-of-8) and
Jahmia Bradley (2-of-4). The Paladins had a 14-point advantage, 50-36, heading into the final period.
SC State outscored Furman 10-9 in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome the poor shooting performance in the third quarter.
Shianne Goodwin had a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds for Furman. Whitney Bunn and Cierra Carter both scored in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Brittany Drumgoole was the Lady Bulldogs' leading scorer for the second straight game. She had 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, one block and steal.
Jasmine Coleman had a season-high 12 rebounds to go with her eight points and two blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs continue their road swing when they play at the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 12:30 p.m. Eastern/11:30 a.m. Central.
