SC State Tennis Teams Sweep Savannah College of Art & Design

ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's and women's tennis teams earned of pair of  impressive victories over nationally-ranked Savannah College of Art & Design of the NAIA Conference Sunday (Jan. 25) at the Hardeep Judge Tennis Center.

The Lady Bulldogs improve to 1-1 with a 5-2 win. SC State claimed the doubles point to gain an early advantage in the match. In women's singles action, posting wins were sophomore Oleksandra Filippova (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 2 spot; sophomore Marketa Marcanikova (6-1,6-4) at the No. 4 spot; freshman Claudia Roca (2-6,6-3,6-4) at the No. 5 spot and sophomore Dakota Brown (7-6,6-2) at the No. 6 spot.

"The young girl's team played well today," said SC State head coach Hardeep Judge. "They really worked hard this week on doubles and it paid off."

Meanwhile, the men also improve to 1-1 with a dominating 7-0 victory on the day. The Bulldogs also claimed the doubles early on in the contest.

Posting singles victories for the Bulldogs were, senior Rodney Carey (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 1 spot; sophomore Martin Figura (6-2,6-3) at the No. 2 spot; sophomore Stanislav Baco (6-3,6-1) at the No. 3 spot; sophomore Soufiane Mouline (7-6,6-2) at the No.4 spot; freshman Jakub Vitek (7-6,6-1)at the No. 5 spot and sophomore Edgar Diaz (6-2,6-1) at the No. 6 spot.

The Bulldogs dropped their season-opener on Saturday (Jan. 24) on the road after a 4-3 defeat to William & Mary.

"The guys played really well and Edgar Diaz played well against William and Mary in doubles," said Judge. "We put him in the singles lineup today and he didnt disappoint, as well Carey, Figura, and Vitek all played with a great deal of confidence."

Judge who coached his last match on the women's side today, closes out a stellar career leading the Lady Bulldogs to 10 straight MEAC crowns along with over 400 career victories in his 13-year tenure with both the men's and women's teams.

South Carolina State will return to action on Sunday (Feb. 8) against Kennesaw State, while the women will return to action on Saturday (Feb.14) versus Charleston Southern. Times may vary.
