SC State Women Fall 70-50 at UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lucy Mason and Shanese Harris each scored 18 points to lead the UNC Greensboro women's basketball team to a 70-50 win over South Carolina State on Thursday night at Fleming Gymnasium.
 
UNCG (4-5) got on the board first with a layup by Mason with 19:12 left in the first half. SC State (5-3) answered on the other end with a jumper by Jahmia Bradley at the 18:57 mark to tie the game at 2-all.
 
A bucket by Kourtney Williams put the Lady Bulldogs up two, 16-14, with 8:54 left, but the Spartans forced the fourth tie of the first half on a jumper by Mason 56 seconds later.
 
Harris drained a 3-pointer at the 7:31 mark to give the Spartans a lead they would maintain for the rest of the game. UNCG took a 33-25 advantage into halftime.
 
The Spartans went on a 16-3 run to start the second half and led by 21 (49-28) after a free throw by Jade Scaife with 11:08 left in the game. UNCG led by as many as 29, 62-33, in final period to put the game away.
 
UNCG shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the floor for the game, outrebounded SC State 44-43, forced 26 Lady Bulldog turnovers and had 11 steals. India Timpton also scored in double figures for the Spartans as she finished with 11 points and added eight rebounds, four blocks, three steals and one assist.
 
SC State made 19 of its 60 shot attempts (31.7 percent), forced 19 UNCG turnovers and had nine steals. Bradley and Williams each contributed 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
 
Jasmine Coleman, who celebrated her 21st birthday today, had a career night. She matched her career-high in rebounds with seven (team-high) and set a new career mark with four blocked shots (team-high). Coleman added seven points and three steals to her performance.
 
SC State returns to the S-H-M Memorial Center for a non-conference matchup against Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
