Box Score BALTIMORE, MD – Coppin State used strong inside scoring and a big edge on the boards to earn a 62-49 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over the South Carolina State women Monday night at CSU Physical Education Complex.
The Lady Bulldogs, who had their three-game win streak snapped, fell to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC. Junior Kourtney Williams has 16 points, 14 in the second half, and a team-high six rebounds to lead SC State, which was outrebounded 47-24 by the Lady Eagles.
DayShaun Richbow added 10 points, all but two in the opening period, and Mykala Jones contributed nine points in the loss.
Coppin State was paced by Kyra Coleman and reserve Janelle Lane, who had 16 points each. Larrisa Carter added 14 points and she and Lane snared 10 rebounds each for the Lady Eagles.
The host scored the first 11 points of the contest and appeared ready to run away and hide, but SC State closed to within one before going to the locker room down just 25-20.
Williams got the first basket of the second half to pull SC State to within 25-22 with 19:27 on the clock but a 17-8 run by the host put Coppin State ahead 42-30 with 12:34 left.
The Lady Bulldogs battled back to within seven, 54-47, with 4:16 left but the Lady Eagles closed out the contest with an 8-2 run for the final margin.
SC State resumes its schedule Saturday when the Lady Bulldogs host Florida A&M in an MEAC doubleheader that gets underway at 4 p.m.
