SC State Goes 1-1 in Sleep Inn/Bulldog Classic

Maine Captures Title

Orangeburg, S.C., September 2, 2012—The SC State women's soccer team went 1-1 in the 2012 Sleep Inn/Bulldog Classic held this past weekend, Friday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept 2, at the Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium.  The Maine Black Bears, who finished the tournament 2-0, captured the tournament title.

On the first day of the tournament, SC State (3-3) fell to Maine, 1-0.  The Black Bears squeaked by the Lady Bulldogs with 53 seconds remaining in the first overtime period for the 1-0 victory.  SC State defeated the Hornets of Alabama State, 4-0 on the second day of the tournament.  In the victory, the Lady Bulldogs dominated every facet of the game including outshooting the Hornets, 20-2. SC State had three different players to score goals as Stephanie Searle, Kaitlynn Cortez and Cassandra Rodriguez each knocked the ball to the back of the net.  The Lady Bulldogs fourth goal came off an own goal by Alabama State's, Samantha Bruno.

In other action of the tournament, Francis Marion went 1-1 over the weekend defeated Alabama State and lost to Maine and Alabama State went winless over the weekend falling to Lipscomb and host SC State.

SC State will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Statesboro, Ga. to face the Eagles of Georgia Southern. The Lady Bulldogs will play its next home game on Sunday, Sept. 23 when they host Prairie View A&M.  The match, which is designated senior recognition day, is set for a 1 p.m. start.
