SC State Goes 1-2 at Lamar Invitational

Junior Desire Waller Earns All-Tournament Honors

Beaumont, Texas—The SC State women's volleyball team Saturday, Sept. 1, defeated Louisiana Tech, 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22), in their last match of the Lamar Invitational.  Junior Desire Waller, who finished the tournament with 40 kills, 23 digs and four total blocks, was named to all-tournament team.

In their first match of the tournament (Friday, Aug. 31), SC State (2-4) fell to Texas State, 0-3 (18-25, 19-25, 12-25).  Waller led the team offensively with 11 kills.  She had seven digs with three block assists.  Junior E. Paige Webb had eight kills with four digs and 1 block assist while freshman Melanie Williams put up 22 set assists with five digs.  Junior Alyse Lewis continued to be solid at the net with five block assists.

In their second match of the tournament (Saturday, Sept. 1), the Lady Bulldogs fell to host Lamar, 0-3 (19-25, 20-25, 23-25).  For the second straight game, Waller led the way with 13 kills coupled with six digs. Webb and sophomore Dorian Corbett each recorded double-digit digs with 11 and 10, respectively.

In the win over Louisiana Tech, Williams and Waller each recorded a double-double as Williams put up 46 set assists with 10 digs and Waller picked up 10 digs to go along with 16 kills.  Sophomore newcomer Maya Bell put down 13 kills in the contest.  Webb led the way defensively with a game-high 29 digs and Corbett put down 10 digs to round out four players with double-digit digs.

SC State will have eight days off before returning to action on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when they host Campbell in their 2012 home-opener.  First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Dukes Gymnasium on the campus of SC State.
