Terrapins Hold Off Bulldogs, 61-46

Adams leads the Bulldogs with game-high 15 points

Junior guard Louis Adams tossed in a game-high 15 points in loss to Maryland.
Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD.  – -South Carolina State tactics of knocking off ACC foe Maryland fell short, as the Terps pulled out an 61-46 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday at Comcast Center.
Challenged by the zone defense and slow motion offense put forth by South Carolina State on Saturday, Maryland struggled on offense but performed well enough to take a hard-earned win over the Bulldogs.
"We wanted to decrease possessions today... Our game plan was to give them one shot by packing our defense in and using our matchup zone," said SC State head coach Tim Carter, who added that the Bulldogs' plan was foiled by their own poor shooting. "When we're not hitting shots, we're not going to be very good," added Carter. "We did a good job defensively. If we had hit our shots it may have been a different game."
Maryland jumped out to a 15-8 advantage off a layup by center Alex Len (So., 7-1) at the 9:15 mark. Senior forward James Padgett's driving layup pushed the Terps lead to 13, 21-8 with 7:01 left in the first-half.
The Bulldogs pulled within single digits, 21-14 off back-to-back 3-pointers by point guard Khalif Toombs (Sr., 5-9) with 5:01 remaining in the half. Maryland responded with a 10-0 run nailing a pair of 3-pointers, followed by a layup by forward Shaquille Cleare (Fr., 6-9) to extend the lead to 31-14 with less than 0:45 seconds left.
Len's power dunk in the second-half gave the Terps a commanding 19-point lead, 48-29 at the 8:40 mark. A long range 3-pointer by guard Logan Aronhalt (Sr., 6-3) increases the lead to, 61-39. Toombs tossed in his third 3-pointer of the night to the lead, 61-42.
The Terrapins outscored SC State, 28-6, in the paint and 17-0 on second-chance points, while out-rebounding the Bulldogs 39-30.
Maryland improved to 8-1 overall, while SC State falls to 4-5. Toombs finished with 12 points for the Bulldogs and Len tossed in team-high 13 and six rebounds in the victory. Maryland shot 18-of-22 free-throws, while SC State was merely 5-of-7.
SC State will embark on  the second of its eight game road stretch, including  “guaranteed” games against Upper Division I foes, Missouri (Dec. 17), Iowa (Dec. 19), Clemson (Dec. 23) and South Carolina (Jan. 5).
