Bison Hold Off Bulldogs 82-76

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC – Senior guard Brandon Riley poured in a game-high 31 points, but it wasn't enough as South Carolina State dropped its eighth-straight MEAC contest to Howard, 82-76 Monday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
        South Carolina State falls to 4-17 overall, 0-8 in the MEAC, while Howard improves to 5-17 overall, 2-7 in the league.
        The Bison had five players in double figures with freshman guard Brandon Ford leading the way with 14 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Tre Lee chipped in 13. Red-shirt junior guard Calvin Thompson added 11 and forward's Prince Okoroh and Mike Phillips each added 10 points in the victory.
        Howard led by as many as six, 35-29, in the first half off a jumper by Prince Okoroh with 4:24 left in the half.  Junior guard Shaquil Barber hit a driving layup with a 1:38 left in the half to cut the lead to five, 40-35.
         The Bison took a 42-35 lead into halftime over the Bulldogs. SC State's Riley led all scorers with 16 points at the half.
         Junior point guard Khalif Toombs nailed a jumper at the 14:48 mark to tie the game in the second half, 44-44. A jumper by Howard's Alphonso Leary built a 10-point, 69-59, for the Bison with 5:47 left in regulation.
         Senior forward Omar Sanders tossed in 14 points, while Toombs added 10 in the loss for SC State.
          The Bulldogs will be seeking its first MEAC win of the season Saturday when they host Savannah State in an MEAC doubleheader, with the women beginning at 2 p.m. and the men in a 4 p.m. tipoff.
