ORANGEBURG,SC—The South Carolina State women's tennis team found themselves in a dogfight against a scrappy Binghamton University team Thursday at SCSU Tennis Courts. The Lady Bulldogs prevailed defeating the Lady Bearcats 4-3.
The Lady Bulldogs (14-2) loss in doubles with Edelman/Gone (BU) def. Skerina/Craciun (SCSU), and Santos/Smirnova (BU) def. Jad/Mendez (SCSU) to earn the doubles point for Binghamton.
SC State rallied back in singles action to earn the 4-3 victory. Leading the way in singles was freshman
Akilah James (New York) def. Yulia Smirnova (6-2, 6-4), sophomore
Maria Craciun def. Marina Bykouskaya (6-2, 7-6), junior
Sabrina Mendez (Spain) def. Emma Leibowicz (6-3, 6-0) and sophomore
Laura Bosneag (Romania) defeating Jennifer Fridman 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
South Carolina State will return to action on Saturday when they face MEAC foe Florida A&M in a battle for first-place in the Southern Division for both teams. The women will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the men in a 2 p.m. contest.
