SC State Falls To Hawai’i 100-73

Second-half comeback lift Rainbow Warriors over Bulldogs.

Box Score HONOLULU—Junior guard Aaron Martin scored a team-high 17 points, while Khalif Toombs added 15 but it wasn't enough as SC State dropped its eighth-straight contest, suffering a tough 100-73 loss to the University of Hawai'i Thursday at Stan Sheriff Center.
        The Bulldogs fall to 4-9 on the season, while the Rainbow Warriors improve to 8-5 overall.
       “We played a great first-half”, said SC State head coach Tim Carter. “After that we had some costly turnovers that put them back into the game and it cost us in the end.”
        SC State jumped out to a 10-point lead 21-10 off a jumper by senior Brandon Riley at the 11:52 mark in the first half. Riley nailed another jumper with 4:03 left to secure the Bulldogs 10 point cushion 36-26.
        UH sparked a 15-6 run to close the gap with Zane Johnson nailing a 3-pointer with 0:07 seconds left in the first-half to cut the Bulldog lead to one, 42-41 at halftime.
        The Bulldogs had four costly turnovers in the second-half, which led to Hawai'i taking the lead for the first time of the night, 46-44, off a jumper by Breteon Hauns at the 18:33 mark. Joston Thomas's monster dunk sparked a 21-5 run that gave the Rainbow Warriors an 18-point lead, 69-51 with 13:00 minutes left.
        University of Hawai'i led by as many as 36, 94-58, with 4:49 left in the contest. Hawai'i held on to defeat SC State 100-70.
        The Rainbow Warriors were led by Hauns Brereton with 22 points, while Joston Thomas was second with 16 points, and 10 rebounds. Zane Johnson added 14 and Shaquille Stokes 10 in the victory.
         Senior 's Brandon Riley and Omar Sanders chipped in 13 each for the Bulldogs, while freshman Luka Radovic grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and scored 7 points in the loss.
         SC State returns to action on Tuesday, Jan 3 when Carter's team travels Columbia to take on intrastate rival South Carolina in a non-conference battle. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
