SC State Wins 104-98 Thriller Over Kennesaw St. In 2OT

Box Score KENNESAW, GA—Senior forward Omar Sanders poured in a career-high 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Brandon Riley tossed in 25 as South Carolina State pulled out a 104-98 double overtime thriller over Kennesaw St. Saturday at the Convocation Center.
       South Carolina State improves to 4-2 overall, while Kennesaw State falls to 2-3 on the season.
       “It was a tremendous team effort and down the stretch we just didn't fold and give up,” said SC State head coach Tim Carter. “I am really proud of these guys on their effort tonight.”
     The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick seven-point lead, 13-6 off a layup by senior forward Presano Bell at the 12:56 mark. The Owls battle back to cut the lead to one, 18-17 off a layup and foul by guard Delbert Love with 9:29 left in the first half.
       SC State built their biggest lead of the half when senior forward Presano Bell nailed a jumper and Sanders tossed in a layup with 1:09 left in the first half. The Bulldogs closed out the half with a 34-22 lead.
       The second half was a battle throughout with Kennesaw State sparking a 15-5 run to cut the lead to two, 47-45 off 3-pointer by guard Spencer Dixon at at the 13:22 mark in the game. It was the third straight 3-pointer Dixon hit to open up the second half.
        Markeith Cummings gave the Owls a six-point lead, 63-58 off a layup with 5:22 left. A jumper by sophomore guard Shaquil Barber tied the game 64-64 with 2:16 left in regulation. Delbert Love layup and foul put Kennesaw State ahead three, 67-64 with a 1:27 left. Riley's jumper with 0:31 seconds tied to send it into overtime.
        There were six lead changes throughout the game.
        In overtime, Riley nailed a jumper at the 3:17 mark to put the Bulldogs ahead four, 76-72. Love's 3-pointer pulled the Owl's within one, 80-79 with a 1:15 left. Junior guard Aaron Martin hit a pair of free throws to give SC State an 84-81 lead with 0:25 seconds left in overtime. The Owls would not go away, while Dixon nailed his sixth 3-pointer of the night to tie the game 84-84 all with 0:07 seconds left to force a second overtime.
        The Bulldogs was without their scorer Brandon Riley who fouled out in the first overtime. SC State jumped out to a quick four-point lead, 90-86 off a layup by Sanders with 3:38 left. A 3-pointer and layup by Love tied the game 93-93 at the 2:03 mark.
        Free throws seemed to be the deciding factor down the stretch as SC State built a six-point advantage, 102-96 off a pair of free throws by Aaron Martin. The Bulldogs sealed the victory off a steal and layup by Barber with 0:09 seconds.
        Carter stated, “Outstanding job tonight from the free throw line, I couldn't ask for a better outcome.”
        SC State shot 93% from the free-throw line hitting 14-of-15 shots, while out-rebounding Kennesaw State 41-37 throughout the game.
       Georgia native Shaquil Barber hit a career-high 15 points, while Aaron Martin added 14 and Presano Bell Chipped in 12 in the victory.
        The Owls were led in scoring by Spencer Dixon with a team-high 26 points, Delbert Love with 22, and Markeith Cummings added 20 in the loss. Aaron Anderson recorded the team's only double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
        SC State will return to action on Tuesday when they host Georgia State in a non-conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
