Toombs Pour In Game-High 21 Points In Win

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—Junior point guard Khalif Toombs poured in a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead SC State to a 73-68 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
       JUCO transfer Aaron Martin chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward Presano Bell added 15 in the win. Bell also tied teammate Toombs with a team-high nine rebounds.
       SC State improves to 3-1 on the season, while Gardner-Webb falls to 2-2.
      “This was a good win for us, despite the fact that we are struggling in our rotation,” said SC State head coach Tim Carter. “The fact we only had 11 turnovers proved to be the deciding factor down the stretch.”
      The first-half was nip and tuck all the way with the Bulldogs jumping out to a three point lead, 11-8 off a layup by Toombs at the 14:48 mark. Gardner-Webb took the lead late in the half on a 3-pointer by Kevin Hartley 25-22 with 3:26 left. Junior guard Aaron Martin nailed a 3-pointer as time expired to close out the first-half with SC State leading 30-28.
       Gardner-Webb built an eight point lead in the second-half off a layup by Max Landis at the 12:21 mark. A pair of free-throw by Toombs with 3:38 left in the game put SC State ahead by one, 53-52. Free-throws seemed to save the day for the Bulldogs converting 28 of 42 on the day.
      SC State held on to a 73-68 victory over Gardner-Webb. Max Landis led Gardner-Webb with 18 points, while Jason Dawson chipped in 12 in the loss. Stefon Johnson posted a game-high 11 rebounds on the night.
      The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Big 12 foe Baylor University in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. central time.
