SC State Defeats Bethune-Cookman in MEAC Women’s Volleyball Contest

Lady Bulldogs Finished Match with Four Players with Double-Digit Digs

Daytona Beach, Fla.—The SC State women's volleyball team picked up its sixth win in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) as they defeated Bethune-Cookman, 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23), in a conference match at Moore Gymnasium.  The Lady Bulldogs had one of their best defensive outings as they had four players with double-digit digs and 10 team blocks.

Both teams began the game very aggressive as they exchanged side-outs over the first 16 points of the set.  SC State used a 4-1 run to break the 8-8 tie and go ahead 12-9.  The Lady Bulldogs increased its lead to 13-10 before Bethune-Cookman's offense came to life.  After the Lady Wildcats tied the score at 13-13, SC State went on a 3-0 run to jump ahead once again, by three, 17-14 and force Bethune-Cookman into its first timeout of the set.  The Lady Bulldogs would go on to increased its lead to five, 19-14 before capturing Set One 25-19.

SC State began set two with a 3-1 lead forcing Bethune-Cookman into a quick timeout.  The Lady Wildcats went on a 3-1 run out of the timeout to take the 4-3 lead.  After SC State tied the game at 8-8, Bethune-Cookman took control of the set.  The Lady Wildcats would go up by four, 14-10, before the Lady Bulldogs put its offense into motion.  SC State used a 5-1 run to knot the game at 15-15.  After exchanging leads over the next eight rotations the Lady Bulldogs took a one point lead at 20-19 and never looked back.  SC State used a 5-1 run to close out Set Two, 25-20 and take a two set lead heading into intermission.

Bethune-Cookman started Set Three with a 4-0 lead.  SC State rebounded quickly with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the game 4-4.  The teams began to exchange leads with neither team taking more than a two-point lead over the first 20 points of the set.  After the Lady Bulldogs pulled within one at 13-12, Bethune-Cookman's offense took over.  The Lady Wildcats went on a 5-1 run to increase its lead to 18-15.  SC State would not be outdone as they used a 5-0 run to once again tie the game, at 21-21. Bethune-Cookman closed the set with a 4-1 run to win the set 25-22.

The teams exchanged leads for most of Set Four before SC State enjoyed the largest lead by either team at 19-15.  After taking its first timeout of the set Bethune-Cookman used a 4-0 run to tie the game at 19-19.  The teams exchanged points for the remainder of the set before a kill by SC State's Shabree Roberson followed by a block assist by Tiffané Jackson and Alyse Lewis gave the Lady Bulldogs the last two points and the 25-23 set three win and the match 3-1.

Desire Waller and Tiffané Jackson led the team offensively with 13 and 10 kills respectively.  Waller recorded a double-double as she picked up 15 digs in the contest to go along with three total blocks (1 solo-2 assists).  E. Paige Webb had nine kills and 14 digs with two block assists while Shabree Roberson had nine kills with four total blocks (1 solo-3 assists). Melissa Robinson had a team-high 18 digs and Brendell Studnicka rounded out the quad of double-digit dig recipients with 10.  Jackson also contributed four block assists as SC State improved to 15-13 overall and 6-1 in the MEAC.

Krysta Gardner put down a game-high 22 kills and Jennifer Jimenez picked up a game-high 20 digs as Bethune-Cookman fell to 10-15 overall and 3-3 in the MEAC.  Janeen Davis also had double-kills with 18 kills for the Lady Wildcats in the loss.

SC State will continue its four-game road swing as they head to Conway, S.C. on Tuesday (Nov. 1), to take on Coastal Carolina before heading to Savannah, Ga. for a MEAC match up versus Savannah State next Sunday (Nov. 6).
