ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men broke a six game winless drought, behind the play of junior guard
Brandon Riley's game-high 22 points. SC State defeated Florida A&M 90-75 Monday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
SC State had four other players in double-figures with junior forward
Presano Bell tossing in 15, while
Carrio Bennett added 11 and senior's
Tyvon Williams and Westley Telafare both chipping in 10 each. Williams also finished with a game-high 10 assists.
Senior guard Westley Telafare nailed a 3-pointer with 5:53 left in the first-half to give the Bulldogs a three point edge, 28-25.Telafare tossed in another 3-pointer with 2:50 left push the lead to seven, 39-32. Junior forward
Joe Ikhinmwin hit a pair of free-throws to close out the half and give SC State a 43-34 lead.
The second-half was all South Carolina State jumping out to their biggest lead of the night, 26 off a 3-pointer by
Brandon Riley with 8:15 left in the game. A dunk by Amin Stevens pulled the Rattlers with 15, 88-73.
A pair of free-throws by Telafare sealed the deal and the 90-75 victory for South Carolina State.
FAMU was led by Amin Stevens (6-6, 205, So. Forward, Roswell, GA) and Avery Moore (5-10, 160, Fr. Guard, Tallahassee, Fl) both finished with 19 points each. Stevens finished with a game-high seven rebounds for the Rattlers.
SC State improved to 6-15 overall, 2-6 in the MEAC, while FAMU falls to 7-14 overall, 2-6 in the league.
South Carolina State will travel to Hampton, VA to take on the Pirates of Hampton University in another pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic contest. Tip-off for the women's game is 4 p.m. with the men following immediately.
