ORANGEBURG, SC -- Sophomore guard
Trinese Fox led four South Carolina State players in double figures with 17 points and added eight rebounds to spark the Lady Bulldogs to an 82-64 win over visiting Southern Wesleyan Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Also scoring double digits for Coach Doug Robertson's team were senior
Whitney Wiley who had 13 points, and junior
Tracey Flowers and sophomore
Tiana Hemphill with 12 each.
SC State snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and climbed to 4-6 on the season.
The Warriors, who dropped to 7-4 on the season, were led by Janaye Gilliard with a game-high 24 points. Ashley Cooper chipped in 12 and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind 16-8 when Brianna Beauford nailed a short jumper for Southern Wesleyan with 13:05 left on the first-period clock but rallied to tie at 16-all when Wiley got a jumper at the 11:20 mark.
The lead changed hands four times and featured as many ties before the host Lady Bulldogs took a 38-33 edge to the locker room.
SC State started the final 20 minutes with a 22-4 spree that put Robertson's team ahead 60-37 midway the period and the visitors could only come as close as 15 points the rest of the way, the final time with just 1:31 showing and the score 77-62. The Lady Bulldogs scored five of the last seven points for the final margin.
SC State returns to action Saturday when it hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference double header, beginning at 2 p.m. The contest will be the first conference action for the Lady Bulldogs, who also host Delaware State Monday at 5:30 p.m.
