ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's team drop their sixth-straight league contest in an heartbreaking 61-60 defeat to Bethune-Cookman at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center Saturday.
The SC State and visiting coaches wore suits and snickers to support the American Cancer Association and National Association of Basketball Coaches national collaboration to raise awareness about cancer and prevention.
The Bulldogs was led in scoring by sophomore guard
Khalif Toombs with 14 points, while junior guard
Brandon Riley chipped in 12 in the loss. Bethune-Cookman was led by junior guard CJ Reed with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Stanley Elliott added 11 in the victory.
SC State jumped out to a three point lead, off a layup by junior forward
Omar Sanders at the 7:51 mark in the first-half. Guard
Khalif Toombs jumper with 1:59 left in the half put the Bulldogs ahead five, 29-24. Toombs nailed a 3-pointer as time expired to close out the first-half to give SC State a 33-26 lead.
Kevin Dukes hit a 3-pointer to put Bethune-Cookman ahead four, 48-52 with 6:33 left in the game. SC State's
Brandon Riley nailed a 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 60-59 lead with 0:49 seconds. CJ Reed tossed in a pair of free-throws with 0:24 seconds left to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 61-60 victory over SC State.
Bethune-Cookman outrebounded 37-24. SC State shot 50% from the 3-point range hitting 8-of-15.
SC State will return to action Monday when they host the visiting Rattlers of Florida A&M in a pivotal and crucial MEAC showdown. Tip-off for the women is 5:30 p.m., with the men following immediately.
