Rock Hill, SC—The SC State women's soccer team defeated Winthrop, 1-0, in a non-conference match-up at Eagle Field on the campus of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. With the win, the Lady Bulldogs picked up their fifth victory in six tries and fourth straight.
Junior Sasha Bender scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 34th minute of the game. She received a pass in the middle of the Winthrop defense, got past two Lady Eagle defenders to get a shot from just inside of the 18-yard that hit the back of the net for the only goal of the game. The Lady Bulldogs received solid defense from senior Goalkeeper, Alechia Brothers who had five saves while recording her third shutout of the season and second shutout in a row.
"What defines a good team is the ability to win even when we don't play well. Today we did not play well, but we won and that is all that matters,” said second-year head coach Glad Bugariu. “I am very proud of this group; it was a well deserved victory."
With the victory, SC State improves to 6-4-0 overall on the season, while Winthrop falls to 3-5-1.
SC State will look to make it five in a row when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Newark, NJ on Friday, Oct. 2, to face NJIT in the team's first-ever Great West Conference match-up. The Lady Bulldogs will then travel to Dover, DE on Sunday, Oct. 4 to take on the Lady Hornets of Delaware State in another conference contest.
