ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State women's soccer battled Hampton for nearly the entire 90 minutes Wednesday afternoon before surrendering a goal in the final seconds of a 1-0 setback at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium on Willie Jeffries Field.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-11-1) kept the contest scoreless through the opening 89 minutes before Hampton's Jayda Sutton scored the game-winner with just five seconds remaining in regulation. The loss dropped SC State to 0-11-1, while Hampton improved to 2-8-1.
SC State goalkeeper
Jada Gittings turned in a strong performance in goal, playing all 90 minutes and recording three saves while allowing just the one late score. Gittings helped keep the Lady Bulldogs within striking distance throughout the midday contest.
The Lady Bulldogs' best offensive opportunities came from
Aaliyah Silver, who accounted for both of SC State's shots. Silver put her first attempt on frame in the 23rd minute, forcing Hampton goalkeeper Jacqueline Jenkins to make the save. Her second opportunity came in the 71st minute and went wide right.
SC State's defense held firm throughout the opening half despite Hampton applying pressure. Gittings made three first-half saves, including stops on Evan-Nichole Whitaker and a pair of attempts by Imani Yarbough. The Lady Bulldogs entered halftime locked in a scoreless tie with the Lady Pirates.
The defensive battle continued after halftime as SC State kept Hampton off the scoreboard deep into the second period. The Lady Bulldogs remained within one play of taking the lead or forcing a draw as the clock moved inside the final minute.
Hampton finally broke through at
89:55, when Sutton scored an unassisted goal — her second of the season — to give the Lady Pirates the 1-0 advantage. The goal came with only five seconds remaining, leaving SC State without enough time to mount a final attack.
Hampton finished with a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Pirates also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. SC State recorded three saves compared with one for
Hampton, while the Lady Bulldogs were called for seven fouls and Hampton five. Both teams were whistled for two offsides.
Despite the final result, SC State's defensive effort kept the match scoreless for virtually the entire 90 minutes, highlighted by Gittings' three saves and Silver generating both of the Lady Bulldogs' offensive attempts.
