ORANGEBURG, SC – Freshman Veronica Aguilar's goal at the 1:18 mark of overtime lifted South Carolina State to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Wofford Monday night at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The teams were deadlocked 0-0 after 90 minutes of regulation.

Aguilar, of La Crescenta, Calif., was playing her first contest after a two-week layoff and missing three matches due to injury. The winning goal came off an assist from junior and Long Beach, Calif. native Brook Ehinger.

The victory was the third in a row and the second overtime triumph in three outings for Coach Glad Bugariu's team, which climbed above the .500 mark at 5-4 on the year, despite starting 10 freshmen.

Although Wofford dipped to 1-7 on the year, traditionally the Terriers have a strong program and play in the highly respected Southern Conference.

“In beating Wofford, it shows that we are capable of playing with anyone on our schedule,' said an elated Bugariu after the victory. “It's now three wins in a row for us.

“Overtime tells a lot about your team,” continued Bugariu. “It takes heart and discipline. I'm proud of everyone on our team.”

The Lady Bulldogs out shot the visitors 13 to 10 and had three corner shots to four for Wofford. Ehinger, a Long Beach Community College transfer, had seven of the Lady Bulldog shots on goal. Aguilar had just one but it was the winner.

Wofford's Erika Chistensen had four saves for the Terriers, while Alechia Brothers had two for SC State, which takes a nine-day break before traveling to Winthrop Sept. 30 for a 7 p.m. match.
