PORT ST. LUCIE, FL -- The South Carolina State men’s golf team is in a tie for sixth place among eleven (11) Division I schools after the opening round of the 23rd PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship Friday at the PGA Golf Club.
Second-round action of the three-day, 54-hole event will get underway Saturday at 7:30 a.m., with the final 18 holes set for Sunday.
The Bulldogs carded an 18-hole team total of 301, 14 strokes behind leader and defending champion Bethune-Cookman with a 287.
In second place was Tennessee State, one stroke behind the leader at 288, followed by Texas-Pan America at 291, Savannah State at 294, North Carolina Central at 296, and the Bulldogs and Florida A&M, both at 301.
Bulldog freshman Roberto Cacho fired a 4-under par 68 to lead Coach Herman Belton’s team and is in second place overall behind Texas-Pan Am’s Armen Kirakossian, who had a 5-under 67 on the day.
Trailing Cacho for SC State were Alejandro Bernadini with a 4-over par 76, Hector Arroyave with a 78 and Robert Biggers at 79. Also participating for Coach Herman Belton’s team is Byron Bush, who had an 85.
