PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – The South Carolina State men's golf team will be among twenty-four (24) squads vying for titles at the 23rd PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship at the PGA Golf Club Friday-Sunday (May 8-10).
The three-day, 54-hole stroke play competition will be played at the PGA's Ryder Course, a 6,835-yard, par 72 layout. The groups will play 18 holes daily.
Championships will be decided in both men's Division I and Division II, as well as in a women's division and in independent competition.
SC State is one of twelve teams competing for the Division I crown. Other participating teams in the division are Alabama A&M, Alabama State, defending champion Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Hampton, North Carolina Central, Savannah State, Tennessee State, Texas Southern, Texas-Pan American and Winston-Salem State.
Making up first-year head coach Herman Belton's Bulldog squad are seniors Robert Biggers of Orlando, Fla., and Byron Bush of Aiken; and Mexico natives Hector Arroyave, a junior; and freshmen Roberto Cacho and Alejandro Bernardini.
SC State won three straight titles (1986-88) in the early years of the event, but has not finished any higher than fifth the last seven seasons.
The Division II field will be made up of Benedict, Fayetteville State, Kentucky State, Lincoln (PA), Morehouse, Paine and Virginia State.
Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Hampton and Texas Pan-American make up the women's field.
