MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Honesty Biggers carded a 36-hole total of 152 to capture medalist honors in leading the South Carolina State women to a third-place finish at the two-day (Mar. 6-7) Fairfield Invitational at the Crown Park Golf Course. The Bulldogs were fourth in the men's competition.
Biggers, a sophomore of Orlando, Fla., fired a 2-over par 74 Saturday, shaving four strokes off her opening round 6-over 78 on Friday, as the Lady Bulldogs carded a 36-hole total of (358-349) 707.
Host Fairfield (NJ) took first place in the event with a two-day total of (333-326) of 659. Albany (NY) was second at (354-325) 679, followed by SC State and Holy Cross at (353-374) 727. Toronto University was disqualified after the opening round and did not post a team score.
All four SC State players finished among the Top 20 in individual honors. Trailing Biggers were senior Addi McLaren, tied for eighth with a (87-85) 172, junior Geneva Mackey, 15th, at (90-92) 182, and Sr. Danielle Williams, 19th, at (103-98) at 201.
The SC State men carded a two-day total of (306-304) 610 to grab fourth in the 10-team men's field, won by Charleston Southern with a (302-286) 588. In second place was Lewis University with a (303-300) 603, followed by first-round leader Jackson State at (301-306) at 607. Then came the Bulldogs, with host Fairfield, at (311-312) 623, rounding out the top five.
Freshman Robert Cacho, second in the individual men's standings after round one with a an even-par 72, had a 4-over 76 Saturday for a 36-hole total of 148 to lead the Bulldogs. Cacho finished in a tie for fifth.
He was followed for the Bulldogs by Hector Arroyave, who was seventh, with a 7-over (77-74) 151; Alejandro Bernardini, with a 10-over (78-76) 154; and Robert Biggers – Honesty Biggers' older brother -- at (79-78) 157.
The SC men resume their schedule Mar. 19 at the Florida A&M Invite in Tallahassee, while the women return to action Apr. 3 at two-day Bulldog Classic in Orangeburg.
