Patrick Horne

Patrick Horne was named Head Women Soccer Coach at South Carolina State University on August 1, 2021.
 
A relentless worker with the passion and knowledge for coaching soccer, Horne started the first ever women’s soccer program at Brooklyn College, in 2012, and in the first three seasons led the Brooklyn Bulldogs to two CUNYAC titles and NCAA Div. III appearances.
 
“I must thank South Carolina State Athletic Director Stacy Danley; Executive, Associate Athletic Director/SWA, Melissa Dawson; and Dr. John Lewis, Deputy Director of Athletics for the opportunity to coach women’s soccer at this prestigious HBCU institution with an admirable athletic tradition,” said Horne, “I will do my utmost to enhance this tradition.”
 
In 2013, Horne led the Bulldogs to a 15-4 overall record to capture the CUNYAC title and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. For his efforts, Horne was named the 2013 CUNYAC Coach of the Year. The Bulldogs repeated as CUNYAC champions in 2014, for a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance in only three years of existence as a program. 
 
Horne led the Bulldogs to a successful inaugural season in 2012, with a 6-7-1 overall record, and in 2015, finished with an 5-11-2 record and a CUNYAC Championships semifinal appearance. 

The Bulldogs returned to the CUNYAC Championship match in 2016 after winning the regular season conference title with an unblemished 6-0 record. Among his charges was the 2016 CUNYAC Player of the Year, Jasmine Fermin, as well as three other First Team CUNYAC All-Stars, Cansu Usta, Saylor Flores and Jordan Kerwin. 

Horne brings a plethora of coaching and playing experience to once again another Bulldog programs, this time to South Carolina State. “I seem to work miracles with Bulldogs, said the newly appointed coach, so here I go again.”  Horne served as the Head Women's Soccer Coach at NCAA Division II Concordia College in Bronxville, NY from 2007-2011. While at Concordia, Horne recruited, trained and mentored student-athletes as part of developing the women's program.

Prior to Concordia, Horne spent one season (2006) as an Assistant Coach of the Women's Soccer team at Division II Molloy College in Rockville Center, NY, where he assisted in the overall preparation of the team, which culminated in Molloy making its first post-season appearance in the East Coast Conference. Molloy was a finalist in the ECAC tournament that year.

Other collegiate coaching stints for Horne include Globe Institute of Technology (Men's Head Coach, 2002-2006), Southampton College (Men's Head Coach, 2001) and SUNY College at Old Westbury (Men's Head Coach, 1997-2000).

Along with his extensive coaching resume at the college level, Horne worked at the youth level. He was the Head Coach of the LIJSL Boys Select Teams U-15, U-17, as well as the Head Coach of the Baldwin Eagles Girls U-14 through U-17 and worked as a youth coach in the Grassroots Program with the New York Red Bulls of the MLS.

Prior to entering the coaching profession, Horne played professionally in both the North American Soccer League and the American Soccer League. His book, published in 2019, Black Pioneers of the North American Soccer League (1968-84), tells the story of the black players’ contribution to the development of soccer in North America.

Horne received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville where he was a four-year member of the Men's Soccer team. He helped lead the team to a runner-up finish in the 1975 NCAA Division I Tournament.  The entire team was inducted into the SIUE Athletics Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.  

Horne also has a Master of Science degree in Education from Alfred University and is a New York State certified English teacher. He is a member of the United Soccer Coaches and holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) B License.
