Dukes Gymnasium
Dukes Gymnasium, erected in 1931, was once the only athletic facility on the SC State campus. Today, it is used for intercollegiate women’s volleyball competition and also houses the Office of Intramural Sports. The facility mostly provides activities for university students who are not affiliated with intercollegiate sports. Intramural activities include basketball and co-ed volleyball, as well as other sports requested by students.
Dukes, as it is commonly called, became the Intramural Center following the opening of Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center in 1968. It contains a regulation basketball court and a place for yoga activities. It has also been home to a weight room on the basement level for non-varsity sports students.
In addition, parties, dances and formal events are held in the facility, which is also used as a practice facility for area schools and community groups.
The facility, located near the center of the campus and across from the Kirkland W. Green Student Center, is a two-story, brick structure with a full basement and a gable on hip roof. The front façade features a five-bay brick arcade.
It one of several historic buildings on the campus and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
