Men’s Basketball On The Road At Howard

WASHINGTON – South Carolina State men's basketball look for a season sweep on the road Saturday (Feb.7) when they take on host Howard in a key showdown Saturday (Feb. 7) at 4:30 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
 
The Bulldogs are 4-2 in conference play, a half-game ahead of the Bison, who are 4-3 in the standings. SCSU defeated Howard, 58-57, in the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) opener in Orangeburg (Jan. 3).

COACHES :SCSU is coached by Erik Martin (Cincinnati, '93), who is in his fourth season. Howard is led by Kenneth Blakeney (Duke, '95), who is in his seventh season.
 
THE SERIES: On Jan. 3, the Bulldogs edged the Bison, 58-57, in the conference opener in Orangeburg. South Carolina State has won four-in-a-row, although, the two programs have split the last 10 matchups. Howard's last win came when it pulled out an 82-78 victory in Orangeburg (Jan. 8, 2024). The Bison last win in DC came when it recorded a 100-74 decision (Jan. 30, 2023).  The Bulldogs hold a 13-10 advantage, dating back to 2005.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE: The Bulldogs (6-16, 4-2 MEAC) are coming off their third straight win, a 63-54 home decision over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday (Feb. 4). Sophomore guard Jayden Johnson led the way with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and six rebounds.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE: The Bulldogs lead the MEAC in blocks (3.5) and three-point shooting percentage (34-percent)…Individually, Johnson, the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, ranks eighth in scoring and assists/turnover, ninth in steals and 10th in free throw shooting percentage (70-percent)…Christopher Parker is fourth in rebounding and seventh in assists…Cameron Clark is seventh in rebounding and eighth in blocks…Owen Bronson is third in three pointers made per game (2.2)…Tim Okojie is second in blocks…Derwin Hodge is fifth in blocks…Florian Tenebay is seventh in steals.
 
HOWARD :Howard leads the MEAC in scoring defense (68.8 ppg), field goal shooting defense (42-percent), offensive rebounding (12.5) and rebounding margin…Individually, graduate guard Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) leads the conference in rebounding (6.9)…Junior guard Cam Gillus (Falls Church, Va.) fifth in assists/turnovers and ninth in free throw shooting percentage (74-percent)…Junior guard Alex Cotton (Carrollton, Texas) is fifth in three-point shooting percentage…senior guard Ose Okojie (Brampton, Canada) ranks eighth in steals…Nationally, Howard ranks 22nd in forced turnovers…Harris is tied for 19th in free throws made and tied for 31st in free throws attempts.
