ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 67–47 loss to Delaware State in MEAC women's basketball action Thursday night inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Delaware State (4–16, 1–4 MEAC) opened with a dominant first quarter, shooting 66.7% from the field while forcing eight turnovers to build a 20–5 lead after ten minutes. The Hornets led the rest of the way and stretched the margin to as many as 25 in the fourth.

Shaunice Reed led South Carolina State with 20 points, going 12 of 14 from the free-throw line while adding five rebounds and four assists.

South Carolina State (5–15, 2–3) briefly climbed back into the game with an 18-8 second quarter that cut the deficit to 28–23 at halftime, but Delaware State answered with a 20-9 third quarter to restore control.

DSU was led by Nykesha Sanders scored 17 points and hit five 3-pointers, and Ericka Huggins posted 10 points and nine rebounds.

SCSU shot 34.9% from the floor and committed 22 turnovers that led to 20 DSU points. The Hornets shot 43.4% and finished with a 24–22 scoring edge in the paint.

Delaware State also held a 9–0 advantage in second-chance points and outscored SCSU 11–6 in fast break opportunities. The teams were tied twice in the opening quarter, but SCSU never led after the 8:26 mark of the first.
