CHARLESTON—South Carolina State dropped a tough, 24-31, decision on the road Saturday (Sept. 27) versus non-conference foe Charleston Southern on Buccaneer Field.
South Carolina State falls to 2-3 on the season, while The Bucs improved to 1-4.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs dominated almost in every category including first downs (rushing (15-8), passing (10-8) – total 25-18), total offense 449-345 (rushing 255-147) and passing (278-163) and time of possession 33:47-26:13.
Quarterback
Ryan Stubblefield completed 18-of-24 for 184-yards, while rushing 18 carries for 80-yards and two (2) touchdowns on the day. Running back
Tyler Smith carried the load on the ground with 13 rushes for 85-yards and one score.
Jalen Johnson led the way for the receiving corps with eight (8) receptions for 77-yards along with
Deyandre Ruffin with three (3) catches for 47-yards.
Roderick Kelly spearheaded the defense with six (6) tackles and one pass breakup along with Jadin Ford with five (5),
Michael Lunz II (2.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks),
Jalen Levine,
Malik Harp all with four (4) tackles respectively.
Nico Cavanillas Alti had a solid day on special teams nailing a season best 50-yard field goal along with a perfect 3-of-3 in PAT's and an average of 56.8 per kick on kickoffs with one touchback.
NEXT UP: South Carolina State will host Savannah State in their next home game Saturday (Oct. 4) during "HOMECOMING". Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
