ORANGEBURG, SC—South Carolina State head football coach Chennis Berry has announced the promotion of Kevin King to Passing Game Coordinator / Safeties Coach.

King previously served as Special Teams Coordinator and Safeties coach, making an immediate impact in his first season producing several All-MEAC performers. A proven winner and a track record of success he has over 10 years of experience coaching defensive backs.

Known for his strategic mindset and detailed approach to pass defense, King now transitions into the Passing Game Coordinator role, where he will oversee the opposing team's entire aerial attack. His background in defending the pass gives him a unique perspective on breaking it down — makes him an asset in developing offensive game plans.

In 2024, Coach King played a critical role in leading the team to a conference championship and an undefeated run in conference play, anchoring one of the most disciplined and dynamic secondaries in the league.
SC State defense ranked in  the top in several categories under King  including interceptions (#1) with a league high 15 and three (3) for touchdowns, kickoffs (#2) with 74 kickoffs for 4,438 and an average of 60.0 yards per kick, field goals made (#3) 9-of-14 (.643%) and punting  (#2) with 52 punts for 2,148-yards along with five (5) touchdown backs and nine (9) fair catches for an average of 37.0 yards per punt.

Coach King noted, " I am committed to teaching the game at a high level, building a sharp mental and technically sound mindset for our athletes, which will contribute  to a adding to championship culture on and off the field.

ABOUT SC STATE ATHLETICS
South Carolina State University is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level intercollegiate athletic program.
