ORANGEBURG, SC—South Carolina State picked up a hard fought 16-15 win over Wofford Saturday (Aug. 30) in the home opener inside Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium on Willie Jeffries Field.
Newcomer and graduate student kicker
Nico Cavanillas Alti posted a solid day connecting on three field goals in the contest to give the Bulldogs an 9-7 advantage late in the third quarter. The Terries jumped on the board with the play of special teams off a returned kicked by Colby Alexander 89-yards for a score.
A costly error by the Bulldogs resulted in a safety and allowed Wofford to take the lead 15-9 in the fourth quarter. SCSU responded with a 1:29 remaining in regulation off a a 12-yard toss from
Ryan Stubblefield to
Shamontae Burgess to secure the 16-15 victory.
William Atkins IV finished 17-of-33 for 175-yards and
Ryan Stubblefield threw for 10-of-17 for 128-yards and a touchdown.
KZ Adams led the rushing attack with 15 carries for 50-yards, while Jalen Johnson caught six receptions for 93-yards.
The defense was led by
Jordan Franklin with seven tackles (5) solo and Michael Lunz with five tackles 2.5 tackles for loss (9-yards) and two sacks (8-yards).
NEXT UP: South Carolina State will travel to Columbia, SC to take on SEC foe University of South Carolina in a non-conference matchup Saturday (Sept. 6). Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
