ORANGEBURG, SC—South Carolina State head track and field/cross country coach Donald Cooper has announced the addition of
Regan Kimtai as the new Assistant Coach for Cross Country/Track & Field.
Kimtai duties will focus on cross country, along with mid-distance and distance events for the SCSU men's & women's track & field teams. He joins the Bulldog staff after serving two seasons as an assistant coach for Norfolk State, specializing in distance.
In his first season on the Spartans' staff, Kimtai played a key role in guiding NSU to MEAC Cross Country Championships in both the men's and women's divisions. He also helped coach six individual champions, across indoor and outdoor track events, for both squads. Additionally, Kimtai contributed to the Spartans' success in securing men's indoor and outdoor track championships, while the women's team earned runner-up finishes in both indoor and outdoor competitions.
Kimtai returned to Norfolk State following a decorated career as a student-athlete for the Spartans. Kimtai placed first in the 800 meters and the 3,000 steeplechase at the MEAC Outdoor Championships in 2023, and winning the mile at the same meet. He earned Most Outstanding Runner honors at both the indoor and outdoor championships.
Kimtai also won the 1,500 meters at the 2022 MEAC Outdoor Championships, as well as the mile at the MEAC Indoor Championships that same year.
Before his time at Norfolk State, Kimtai competed at North Carolina A&T from 2018-21. He earned a second-place finish for the Aggies at the MEAC Cross Country Championships as a freshman.
He also captured the 800 meters, mile, and 5,000 meters at the MEAC Indoor Championships that same year. He built on those finishes during the outdoor season, taking first in the 1,500 meters and the 800 meters at the MEAC Championships.
Kimtai earned first place as a sophomore in the mile, 5,000 meters, and the distance medley relay at the MEAC Indoor Championships. He also won the javelin throw and the 1,500 meters during the MEAC Outdoor Championships.
Kimtai earned his bachelor's degree from Norfolk State in 2022.
