BALDWIN, N.Y. | South Carolina State head football coach
Chennis Berry was among seven coaches and 21 assistant coaches who have been selected to the 2024-25 Advancement of Blacks in Sports (ABIS) Watchlist.
The ADBS is the voice of racial equity in sports and coaches are nominated by their peers and others within the football ecosystem.
"We're proud to be a part of creating this Watchlist for these well-deserving coaches," said ABIS Founder and CEO Gary Charles.
Berry, who just completed his first season at the helm of the Bulldog Football program, is the only coach in school history to guide his team to a conference championship in their first season. Along with making his mark in SC State Football history, Berry earned numerous accolades along the way, among them AFCA Coach of the Year, MEAC Coach of the Year, and a third straight selection to the HBCU Legacy Bowl coaching staff. His achievements included coaching the MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year, MEAC Offensive Player of the Year and HBCU+ National Player of the Year.
This is the fourth year of the ABIS Coaches Watchlist. It has become a great resource for sports executives, athletic administrators, and search firms.
Three highlights from the list of coaches are the Philadelphia Eagles land three coaches on the list;
Marcus Freeman (Notre Dame) is the first Black Head Coach to lead a team to the FBS National Championship game and T.C. Taylor (Jackson State) leads school to its first Celebration Bowl win. Celebrating Black excellence in sports is what drives ABIS to showcase these coaches and present the Watchlist each year.
