Bulldogs Conduct First Spring Scrimmage

ORANGEBURG, SC— South Carolina State conducted its first scrimmage of spring drills Saturday (March. 30th) at O.C. Dawson Stadium/Willie Jeffries Field. This wrapped of the second full week of practice for Coach Pough and the Bulldogs.

Approximately 80 players participated in the scrimmage which lasted about two and half hours and over 100 plays called by the offense.

"We wanted to make sure we put in enough plays on offense to give some of the young guys a chance to play today," said Pough. "Its more about the new players giving them an opportunity to show what they can do in a game style situation, that's why we went as long as we did today."

Pough stated, "It's an exciting time of year for our team and most of our guys are in place on both offense and defense from last year. We have the same coordinators and coaches so it makes for a smooth transition during the installation phase for the new players."

When asked about any new players that he feels can make a difference for the team moving forward, Pough praised mid-year transfer Camryn Johnson (6-4, 190) of Calhoun County.

The offense show some bright spots with a couple of touchdown scores from junior wide receiver Demontrez Burroughs.

"When the offense or defense does something good you have to worry about who is not doing their job," said Pough. "At this point we are in the process of developing players to where we can get back to being a championship team."

South Carolina State will end spring drills with the annual Garnet and Blue spring game April 13. The contest kicks off at 12 noon, at O.C. Dawson Stadium and admission is free.

Prior to the game on Friday, April 13th, the South Carolina State Class of 1975 will host its annual A Night Of Legends of Jazz at the Orangeburg Country Club, Friday, April 12th from 7 p.m.-11 p.m. Admission is $125 per person can be paid at the South Carolina State Ticket Office at (803) 536-8303.
