ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State held its third preseason workout Monday morning amid hot and humid temperatures at O.C. Dawson Stadium. Monday's practice, the first drill conducted in shells (helmets and shoulder pads), lasted a little over two hours.
The Bulldogs continued to install their offensive and defensive schemes and also placed emphasis on running in order to assist the players in getting acclimated to the hot temperatures. The kicking game also received some attention.
"It's a work in progress," Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough said following the workout. "We have a young team and the staff is working hard, trying to figure out who can help us put a solid team on the field. We are taking a look at a lot of guys in key drills, which will give us an opportunity to evaluate them to see if they can help."
Pough noted that almost half of the Bulldog preseason camp is made up of freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores.
"When you have so many young players, you have to work extremely hard to teach them and get them ready to contribute," Pough said. "We are light years away from where we need to be but it's early in our preparation and we will see how it goes."
Pough said that a couple of players struggled a bit amid the high temps but noted that overall, the team responded pretty well to the humid conditions.
The Bulldogs resume drills Tuesday afternoon at 2:30.
