DOVER, DEL—The South Carolina State led throughout the contest but it wasn't enough as Delaware State scored the deciding goal to force a 1-1 tie Thursday (Oct. 4th) evening at Alumni Stadium.
South Carolina State (0-8-1) led for more than 71 minutes in regulation after scoring the first goal of the match in the 17th minute. Justine Zepeda scored from close range off a feed from Tamika Aguilar to give the Bulldogs the early lead.
The Hornets had several great scoring chances after falling behind but failed to connect. Savannah Ay (fry) had a breakaway opportunity in the first period, but was stopped by SC State goal keeper Taylor Brittingham.
In the second period, DSU's Mary O'Conner (fr.) had a chance to tie the match on a penalty kick, but missed right.
The Hornets (2-9-2) appeared headed for defeat but finally broke through when Jade Jamison (jr.) scored on a header off a perfect cross from the right corner by Katrina Silva (jr.) to tie the score in the 88th minute.
Delaware State had three shot attempts in the first overtime, one on goal, and Brittingham had two saves for the Bulldogs in the second extra period.
The Hornets outshot the Bulldogs 13-9, although each team had eight shots on goal.
Brittingham recorded seven saves in the tie.
South Carolina State returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 9th) when they host USC-Upstate in a 7 p.m. contest at O.C. Dawson Stadium.
