Last Second Buzzer Beater Lift Bulldogs Over Delaware State

Box Score DOVER, Del., --Senior guard Patrell Rogers nailed a long range three-pointer as time expired to lift South Carolina State to an, 63-60, victory over Delaware State (2-13 overall, 0-2 MEAC) Saturday (Jan
 6th) at Memorial Hall.

Rogers finished with eight points, while James Richardson led the Bulldogs (5-12 overall, 1-1 MEAC) with a team-high 12 points and sophomore forward Ozante Fields added 10 and seven rebounds in the win.

"First off what a finish. It was so important for our guys to get this win on the road versus a super tough Delaware State team," said head coach Murray Garvin. "We knew that it would come down to the wire, like all MEAC games should. I am so proud of our guy's mental toughness dealing with the travel adjustments we had to make for this trip and how it affected our preparation and schedule."

Forward Damani Applewhite added an extra push in the frontcourt with eight points and seven rebounds.

The game was pretty much even throughout with South Carolina State forcing DSU to a game-high 15 turnovers. The Hornets won the rebounding battle edging out the Bulldogs 37-36.

SC State jumped out early taking a 11-0 lead off a layup by sophomore forward Alex Taylor at the 15:16 mark. Marquis Collins tossed in a three-pointer to rally DSU to within three, 23-26, with 3:03 remaining in the first-half.

Field's lay up closed out the first-half to give South Carolina State a 30-29 advantage during intermission.

During the second-half, the game was tied 54-54 with 7:32 remaining. The Bulldogs jumped ahead four, 60-56 off a dunk by Fields with 3:09 left in regulation.

The Hornets responded off a steal and layup by Kavon Waller to pull within two, 60-58. Collins tied the game, 60-60, for the eight time nailing a pair of free-throws from the charity stripe with 0:14 seconds remaining.

Rogers long ranged three-pointer as time expired sealed the victory for South Carolina State.

"It feels good to get a road win and for Patrell to win the game at the buzzer, great team victory! We'll always take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day. We will enjoy this win and look forward to returning home to South Carolina safely."
