DOVER, Del.—The South Carolina State men's basketball team will resume Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play Saturday (Jan. 6
th) against host Delaware State at Memorial Hall.
The game's original time was changed due the inclement of bad weather from a snow storm earlier this week. Both schools agreed to a 5 p.m. tip-off for the women's contest, and 7 p.m. start for the men's. The contest was originally set to begin at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
Both teams enter the contest after suffering tough defeats in the league opener on Wednesday. The Bulldogs fell short 80-86 in a tough decision to Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, while the Hornets dropped a heartbreaker to the MEAC's Defending Champion North Carolina Central 65-62 at home.
Senior guard James "JJ" Richardson poured in a game-high 20 points, while sophomore forward
Damani Applewhite chipped in 19 and six rebounds for the Bulldogs (4-12 overall, 0-1 MEAC).
DSU (2-14 overall, 0-1 MEAC) had three players in double-figures with Artem Tavakalyan leading the way with a team-high 15 points, Kavon Waller added 13 and Pinky Wiley finished with 10 for the Hornets.
"Preparing for Delaware State you can very easily see on film they are way better than their record indicates. Like most teams in the MEAC they have played a very tough out of conference schedule," said head coach
Murray Garvin.
"We will have to execute against a very tough zone defense that has changed from possession to possession. Coach Walker & Staff do an outstanding job of getting the most out of their guys," said Garvin. "Like all MEAC games we expect it to be decided in the last 5 minutes of the game. We will be ready to play and look forward to a hard fought contest."
Wright leads South Carolina State in scoring at 15.2 ppg, while Applewhite is the leader in the frontcourt at 11.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per outing.
The Hornet's are led by Kobe Gantz with 13.5 points and 5.2 rebounds, while Tavakalyan and Simon Okolue scores a little over 10.1 points each.
