NORFOLK, Va., —South Carolina State, the top seed from the Southern Division, advanced to the championship match for the second straight year after a 4-0 win over No.2 seed Norfolk State Friday in the semifinals of the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Tennis Championship, held at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
The Bulldogs will take on the Rattlers of Florida A&M, the Southern Division's No. 2 seed, in Saturday's championship match. FAMU defeated Morgan State 4-1.
In the first matchup SC State took the doubles point against Norfolk State, before going on to take three singles matches in straight sets.
Martin Figura took the No. 1 singles match over Andres Alcaraz, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, while
Stanislav Baco won his No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-3.
Aleksander Stupar defeated Ignacio Guevel 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.
Meanwhile, Florida A&M took the doubles point to open the proceedings, they took three of the four singles matches that were completed. Courage Okungbowa picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jeremy Field in the No. 1 position, and Walner Espinoza defeated Lucas Krusinksi 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.
Illya Skoromnyy (6-2, 6-1) also won at the No. 6 position.
South Carolina State is looking for its eight-straight title – and its 11
th in the last 12 years. Florida A&M, meanwhile, is looking for its first men's tennis title since 2000.
Saturday's championship match will kick off at 12 p.m. for the men.
The championship is free and open to the public.
