ORANGEBURG, SC—The offense avenged last season loss in a 20-17 victory over the defense in the annual Garnet & Blue spring football game Saturday (April 15), with over 500 Bulldog fans and supporters in attendance at Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium.
Prior to the game the defense won the last two meetings, but this time things would be different with the offense showing a balance approach at the end of spring drills.
The offense started out early on a 48-yard quarterback keeper up the middle by redshirt junior quarterback
Mykal Moody. Sophomore quarterback Dewann Ford responded on a 3-yard touchdown punch after junior kicker
Tyler Scandrett nailed a 44-yarder to keep the game alive.
The defense accumulated its points after stopping drives by the offense – one point for any stop and two points for turning the offense away on a 3-and out.
Ford finished with 3-of-4 for 67 yards and a touchdown, while starting quarterback
Marquane Goodman was 3-of-8 for 27 yards. Freshman teammate
Donte Lampley was 2-of-2 for 27 yards. Moody led the way rushing with four carries for 60-yards and a touchdown and freshman running back LeBron
Morris had a solid day rushing with nine carries for 52 yards. Hunter-Kinard-Tyler's Jarius Jenkins finished with eight carries for 40-yards.
The defense was led by defense back Jabari Myers with four tackles, while freshman linebacker
Lane Jones,
Maurice Pauling and sophomore defense back Kendrick Gathers all finished with three tackles each. Junior defense end
Cordell Brown posted the only sack of the day.
During halftime of the spring game several players were honored for their player during the 2016 season. A special recognition was made for the 2016 SC State Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees who were enshrined in formal ceremony Friday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
SC State will play an 11-game schedule in 2017. The Bulldogs open the campaign on Sunday, September. 3 against SWAC foe Southern University in the annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Baton Rouge, LA.
